Caliscana Wine
Selections
Winery
From the love for two coutries very far but united by a strong wine vocation,
California and Tuscany,
is born Caliscana (Cali-scana).
The Winery, owned and created by Roberto Crea, a worldwide renown scientist in Biotechnology.
The winery wanted to leverage especially upon the quality of grape varieties such as the Ansonica (white
grapes) and Sangiovese (red grapes) grown in Maremma, the southern region of Tuscany. By the use of knowledge and technologies employed in the art of winemaking
in California, in the Napa Valley and Amador County, the Company ha quickly reached high levels of quality and bottles production.
Today, Caliscana winery is, after only three years of industrial wine production, one of the new fledging Italian wine makers operating both nationally and
internationally.
In Italy, Caliscana has achieved great success and established itself as one of the most exciting presence at the Vinitaly in Verona, Italy, one of the most
prestigious wine show in the World, with its Ansonica 2005 and Sangiovese 2004 and it has been greeted as one of the most innovative winery of the past years.
Winemaker
Francesco Matteuzzi became the winemaker in 2003 and has generated considerable
attention to the product. Born in Florence and graduated in 1988 at the Institute Tecnico Agrario “ B. Ricasoli” in Siena, the young Francesco starts his
career as a wine expert, specialized in winemaking and viticulture. He gets a great start for his career immediately after school with the great Antinori
Wineries in Santa Cristina and Fattoria di Peppoli in Tuscany.
Vineyards
The
vineyards, 25 hectars of grapes grown at the foothills of Caparbio,
enjoy an great exposure to sunlight both during the winter and the summer time. Their exposure to the sea breeze of the Tirrenum sea also provides our wines
with the typical salinità of soils exposed to the oceans.
The Maremma is extremely
different than Northern Tuscany. The Maremma is often referred to as the "Wild West", both in terms of its landscapes and its winemaking. While in
Northern Tuscany, the Etruscans were making wine thousands of years before, the Maremma used to be a wild, swampy backwater and viticulture was only introduced
to the region in the 19th century. It wasn't until about the 1980's that foreigners had even heard of Maremma wines.
The use of native and local root stocks
together with the growing of new international grape varieties have provided Caliscana with a wide range of wines and wine blends. The grape varieties grown in
our vineyards include Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese as red grapes and Ansonica as white grapes. Ansonica is an native rootstock that grows only in the
seaside region of southern Tuscany, Maremma, and yields an elegant wine with pale yellow color and fresh harmonious fruity taste..
